The Ewa Mall Expansion at Ala Moana Center added 1.5 milion square feet to what is known as the largest open air mall in the world. Challenges faced by our design team, were varied – from dealing with an expansion with a large footprint in a land-locked urban core (concurrent to the construction of an adjacent building); respecting our Na Iwi O Na Kupuna line of sight issues; sewer distribution to two separate streets because of the size of the project; to the unique use of electrical service vaults within the buildings.

Showcased within the design of the Ewa Expansion is Schnackel’s experience with mixed use campuses. The sheer area encompassed by this project and the coordination involved with buildings of various types, multiple utility service connectors, and a complex infrastructure for current and future uses are all a part of Schnackel’s expertise.
