]]>This project was a new 2.7 million plus square foot, mixed-use facility featuring Retail, Hospitality, High-Rise Office, Restaurants, Residential, a Paseo with Common Public Areas, and Structured Parking. Part of a 22,500 acre Master-Planned Community, Schnackel Engineers was involved in all phases of the Downtown Summerlin project, including Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Data Communications, Security, and on-site utility coordination.
Unique design challenges of a project this size were numerous, but of special interest were the challenges of creating an open air lifestyle design in the hot Nevada desert, while incorporating cutting-edge energy and environmental design requirements necessary to have a long term successful project and to obtain LEED Certification. These challenges were met through innovative system controls, aggressive water management and progressive utility strategies.
Downtown Summerlin has attained LEED Silver Certification.

]]>Schnackel Engineers was selected as the MEP Engineering Consultant for the new Cal Aquatics Center at UC Berkeley, where an additional training/recreational pool was needed to relieve demand on existing pool facilities. The new center includes just over 25,000 square feet buildings that will house locker rooms, storage and a multi-purpose building. The facility will have a 50 meter pool and a 10 meter diving platform.
The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification.

]]>Schnackel Engineers provided MEP design services on the project utilizing the full power of our Artificial Intelligence software, AI for MEP. Each car manufacturer had very unique requirements that required a great deal of detailed coordination throughout each showroom to achieve the diverse aesthetics required by the brands. Our AI technology’s insertion tools allowed for the very efficient definition of the complex needs of the building in a fraction of the time it normally takes using conventional engineering methods.
AI for MEP optimized the distribution systems to achieve the minimum construction cost, while providing the most energy efficient, sustainable systems possible. Optimization included the reuse of the existing gas piping systems by increasing the pressure to achieve reuse of the existing materials. AI for MEP
allowed Schnackel Engineers to zone and circuit the power systems to reduce the amount of circuiting, voltage drop and floor slab cutting required. Overall, the materials and labor used in the construction of the MEP distribution systems were reduced from 10 to 30 percent through AI optimization. What’s more sustainable than using 10 to 30% fewer materials in the construction of the MEP systems, while saving energy over the life of the facility?
“Thank you very much for the excellent work, the comments where light, easily and quickly handled. Much appreciated.” – Kevin J. Cleary, Baylis Architects

]]>The Schnackel team was selected by Callison Architecture as the MEP engineering consultant for this project for Intuit. The scope was a full gut/remodel of a 2-story, 58,000 SF existing building on the Intuit campus in Mountain View, CA. Once again, Schnackel was brought on-board for their aesthetic acumen of the built environment, as Intuit wished to remodel and strengthen their brand in this 2-story work space. The HVAC design was of particular note here. The biggest challenge was that existing RTUs were to remain, and the new design had to be completely re-routed. Schnackel’s experience with workspace remodel and restrictive parameters was key to accomplishing Intuit’s and Callison’s goals, and delivering another successful project.

]]>It is always an honor to collaborate with our clients on their own personal projects and helping them realize their vision. In 2015, Retail Design Collaborative partnered with us on the remodel of their new headquarters in Long Beach California. The original building was a defunct Nordstrom Rack that was transformed into 34,000 square feet of creative office space.
Schnackel Engineers integrated numerous sustainability strategies into the design by innovative use of natural daylight and ventilation, lighting controls for energy conservation, low water consumption, and smart material selection that met the requirements of the California Building and Energy Codes. This all resulted in the project being awarded LEED Platinum in 2017.

]]>Schnackel Engineers was also chosen as the MEP/FP engineering services provider for yet another high profile mall expansion and remodel of Westfield Galleria at Roseville. Opening in the Fall of 2008, the addition and remodel of over 430,000 square feet will include enough area to add over 100 new retail stores, restaurants and multi-featured common area. The challenge on this project for Schnackel was that two new concourses cut through already existing retail tenant base, joining MEP/FP systems already in place. Extensive coordination with the local utility provider, as well as open lines of communication with the owner proved critical as the project evolved. Our team worked diligently to maintain the existing aesthetic and helped to create a new one in the vibrant, new addition. Let us help you to Realize Your Vision.

]]>Schnackel Engineers was chosen by Brand+Allen Architects as the MEP Engineering consultant to assist in the design of several high-end retail stores. Among them was BVLGARI’s Flagship store in San Francisco. A great deal of preparation, including a visit to BVLGARI’s headquarters in Rome Italy and the “sister store” in Valencia Spain, was taken to study the Italian crafted millwork and intricate Italian lighting fixtures, and then translating these to U.S. approved components, all the while keeping in compliance with strict U.S. codes and energy efficiency standards. Schnackel Engineers direct dealings with the owner in this case exemplifies our ability to transcend language barriers and foreign standards to deliver a highly complex project within tight time constraints.

]]>Schnackel Engineers were chosen by the LVMH Group to provide the MEP Engineering services for the design of the Louis Vuitton’s Santa Monica Place location in Santa Monica, CA. Already in a LEED Certified mall, the location was chosen by LVMH as to feature the first Louis Vuitton to pursue LEED Certification of any kind. One of the challenges that was faced by our team was the extensive building envelope study that was required in order to comply with Louis Vuitton’s visions of their project, while keeping the strict landlord requirements in mind as well. From a sustainability standpoint, the store also utilized innovative lighting technology in order to reduce energy consumption through a new and unique type of ballast. Our experience as a LEED MEP consultant proved invaluable to this haute-couture retailer, and Schnackel’s attention to the aesthetic implications of MEP systems design once again delivered high-end results.
