As an employee of Schnackel Engineers you will, within a very short time, begin designing challenging projects within your chosen discipline as part of a collaborative team of design professionals. From small tenant and office spaces to large mixed-use facilities, you will broaden your knowledge of your discipline on projects that cover a wide range of types, under a variety of governing code authorities.

What we are looking for:

We are currently looking for a highly skilled and motivated individual who takes pride in their work and finds satisfaction in a project delivered in a timely and accurate manner as a Full-Time Fire Protection Designer.

You will work with a team consisting of a project manager, an electrical engineer, an electrical designer, a mechanical (HVAC) engineer, a mechanical (HVAC) designer, and a plumbing designer. Responsibilities include:

  • Becoming familiar with the codes that are applicable to the project.
  • Using AutoCAD and other software to create fire protection construction document packages which include:
    • Fire Sprinkler plans including device layouts, piping, schedules, details, and hydraulic calculations.
    • Fire Protection sketches to convey critical dimensions
    • Construction specifications.
  • Performing all required calculations to support design decisions, including load calculations, pipe sizing calculations, and equipment sizing calculations.
  • Coordinating with local utility companies to provide the required utility services to the project.
  • Coordinating with equipment vendors and manufacturer’s representatives for selection and specification of appropriate equipment.
  • Coordinating with the client, the MEP/FP design team, and other consultants to ensure the design is consistent with the client’s vision, to identify and resolve areas of conflict, to ensure a fully coordinated interdisciplinary design, and to ensure the design schedule is maintained.
  • Participate in meetings and conference calls when deemed necessary.
  • Provide construction administration (CA) services, including answering requests for information (RFIs).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Fire Protection Technology, Construction Management, or Computer Aided Drafting Technology with Mechanical Emphasis.
  • Basic understanding of fire protection theory (system layout, sizing, flow characteristics, etc.).
  • One or more year(s) of AutoCAD experience.
  • Passionate about expanding educational background of fire protection design principles.
  • Exceptional communication and organization skills.
  • Exceptional ability to prioritize tasks and multitask.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently upon receiving necessary direction and information.
  • Thrive in fast-paced environments with desire to work efficiently.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology with a Mechanical or Fire Protection Emphasis.
  • Previous fire protection design experience with an MEP/FP engineering consultant/contractor.
  • Previous fire alarm system design experience with a fire protection contractor of an MEP engineering consultant in addition to fire sprinkler system design experience.
  • One or more year(s) of Revit experience.

  • Associate (Required)

Experience:

  • AutoCAD: 1 year (Required)
